Continual learning is a cornerstone of the ASMAN programme. Nurses stay updated about best practices in emergency and high-risk cases, through engaging game-based learning modules. So far, the game includes almost 29 clinical scenarios where nurses must navigate through the case by choosing the appropriate test and intervention. Available in both English and Hindi, the game has several levels and a leader board to encourage healthy competition and interactive learning.
Technology Innovation
The ASMAN digital platform is a tablet-based intrapartum and immediate postpartum monitoring and decision support tool. It enables nurses to follow best practices while caring for mothers and newborns at and just after delivery. The tablet includes the safe childbirth checklist and can be used by nurses to enter case data in real time. Alerts and notifications help to identify high-risk cases, so nurses can respond appropriately and in time.
Monitoring and Evaluation
The ASMAN team conducts baseline, midline evaluations and process mapping to collect qualitative and quantitative data from the ASMAN facilities. This allows for programme stakeholders to take stock of the output so far and objectively evaluate the success of the programme based on outcomes. Key learnings and insights gained as a result of these evaluations can help in the future scale up of this programme.
REMOTE SUPPORT CENTRE
To provide nurses with the assistance they need, when they need it, remote support centers have been set at a hospital or medical college where expert gynaecologists and senior residents are available 24X7. Audio call and notification functions on the ASMAN digital platform allow for easy, two-way communication. By using already established healthcare facilities to host the remote centres, the ASMAN model has ensured the sustainability of this intervention.
CAPACITY STRENGTHENING
Nurses give mothers the quality care they need during delivery and just after birth and play a crucial role in ensuring their health and that of their newborns. ASMAN provides nurses with on-demand audio and video tutorials; in-person mentoring; and remote assistance. This empowers them with the know-how to work more efficiently and effectively, while also making them more confident to handle high-risk and emergency cases.
